The Southeastern Men’s Basketball Championship (SEC Basketball Championship) ranks as one of the biggest events in the region. The SEC Basketball Championship stands strong as one of the longest-running men's basketball tournaments in the country, since its formation in 1933. Since the reinstatement in 1979, its seeding is based on regular season records. Expanding to 14 league teams, the 2013 SEC Basketball Championship was the first with a new format. There are now four bottom seeds, number 11 through number 14, that play the opening games and the top four get a “double-bye” into the quarterfinals. The winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This is an intense division, it remains a battle between some of the consistently strongest teams in college basketball.
